Lake Chad: Nigeria to Pay N345m From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday disclosed that Nigeria would pay about N345 million ($2.5 million) which is half of its lion share of $5m, for the feasibility study of the water transfer scheme from Dubangui River to Lake Chad. The amount is the proposed sum for the study that would affect about four other countries touched by Lake Chad which are the Republic of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and the Central African Republic. The President, in his address at the 51st session of the Council of Ministers of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) at the ECOWAS Secretariat, Abuja also called for a donor's conference to "develop alternative fast-track strategies to arrest the resources for the benefit of all riparian countries and the poulations within the basin." While emphasising on the urgent need to "halt the shrinking or disappearance of Lake Chad," President Obasanjo noted that "the challenges before us require adequate funding and no organisation can function effectively without a strong financial base. It is in this regard that all member countries must resolve to pay their outstanding arrears and annual contributions as and when due.nt added.
