Gas Flaring: House Threatens Errant Firms
House of Representatives yesterday threatened to wield the big stick against multi-national oil corporations involved in the exploration of oil and gas in Nigeria's vast oil fields if by 2008, such corporations failed to extinguish all gas flares in their operations.
it also urged the relevant stakeholders to speedily conclude the preparation of the National Gas Policy document as it held the keys to many decisions and projects, including the $500 million (US dollar0 West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP)
Chairman of the House Committee on Gas, Hon. Mercy Almona-Isei made these pronouncements in Warri yesterday when she led other members of her committee on a tour of facilities of the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) Ekpan.
Almona-Isei who frowned upon the debt profile of government parastatals and the impact of that debt on the operations of NGC said that the time had come for the Nigeria Gas Company to operate fully as a business entity by selling its products to customers at commercial rates.
"The legislature is ready to apply the big stick. let 2008 be 2008. We will give stiff penalties to anybodywho fails to abide by the 2008 deadline. The better option of flaring down should be embraced bythe multinational oil corporation.
If the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) is owing NGC so much we will ensure that we put in enough pressure on the organisation to pay its bill as it will amount to cheating if NEPA continues to collect bills from electricity consumers without paying its own dues to the Nigeria Gas Company," Almona-Isei stated.
Earlier, the Managing Director of NGC Mr Smart Fadayomi had == House of Representatives Committee on Gas to assist the organisation overcome the obstacle of crippling debt profile recorded against government parastatals.
Fadayomi, represented by the Manager, Planning, Engineer Oyeyimika Oyediran also solicited the support of the legislature for the expansionof the national gas grid, especially the extension of the gas pipeline from Ajaokuta to Abuja, Kaduna and Kano.
