Jigawa to Build 4,750 Houses in 2005

Jigawa State Government plans to build about 4,750 houses between now and the end of next year through the Jigawa Savings and Loans Limited, the state-owned Primary Mortgage Institution (PMI).
Managing Director of the company, Alhaji Ali Magashi said 1000 units of the houses will be sited in Dutse and Hadejia respectively, 500 units each in Gumel, Kazaure and Ringim, 100 houses each in Birnin Kud, Mallam Madori and Babura while 50 houses each will be built in the remaining 19 local government headquarters.
In a statement, Magashi explained the project was part of the efforts of the state governor, Alhaji Saminu Turaki to ease problem of housing in the state.
He disclosed that the present management has revived the ailing company and completed 744 housing units in Dutse, the state capital since assumption of office.
Already, about 300 civil servants had taken possession of the houses, the managing director said adding, and another 200 houses were now being packaged for allocation to another set of beneficiaries. This, he noted, had not only provided houses for people in remote villages but has helped in the employment of youths who acquired necessary skills in alternative building techniques.
The Managing Director commended the presidential technical committee on housing and urban development under the chairmanship of Prof.Akin Mabogunje and the management of FMBN for caring all stakeholders along in the implementation of the national housing policy.
Magashi, an apostle securitisation of mortgages in the country suggested the development of secondary market as a way out of sourcing long term finances for housing development.
He painted a bright picture for housing sector in the country as a result of the Federal Government's favourable macro and monetary policies.
He advised stakeholders to devise ways to ease access to mortgage loans in order to realise the Federal Government vision of providing decent housing for all Nigerians.
He listed some of the problems militating against the effective development of the housing sector as issuance of certificate of occupancy, consent to mortgage and consent to assign as well as accurate date.
In realisation of these problems, he disclosed that the state governor, Saminu Turaki commenced computerisation of its land department and has also commenced land reform, delivery and speedy documentation process.
He said Jigawa was the only state apart from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to computerise its land administration adding, the state has also introduced the GIS using its broadband wireless network to accelerate land administration processes.
