Federal Government yesterday flagged off the survey and census of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMES) in all the 57 Local Governments of Lagos state.
The objective is to help Lagos state actualise its vision of exploiting the SMES as a means of improving the socio-economic status of the country.
At the ceremony in Lagos, the Director General of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDA), Mrs. Modupe Adelaja said there was need to sensitise Nigerians on the gains of having a virile SME sub-sector in Nigeria.
She said the survey/census, to be conducted in all the local governments, is aimed at determining the population of micro, small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria.
The SMEDA director general noted that it was imperative to enable the agency identify viable projects that could be recommended to local and foreign investors, especially identifying SMES needs in respect of capacity building, skill acquisition and trainings.
Speaking also, Lagos state governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu said his government had already started mapping out micro, small and medium enterprises in the state.
Tinubu, who was represented by Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Prince Lanre Balogun added that the information and data so collated after the survey would go a long way to determine the basis for developmental initiative in the area of MSMES in the country.
He expressed confidence that the exercise would provide information on what is on ground in order to be able to plan and ensure proper execution of government's developmental projects.
The governor assured that his administration was prepared to achieve set targets through the SMES "as this would go a long way in supporting our social engineering programmes designed to increase the economic potential and employment opportunity in the state".
The commissioner for Commerce, blamed the problems of SMES on lack of funds and the absence of proper business information that would enable investors acquire raw materials and run their businesses effectively.
