Dariye's Aide Detained over Yelwa-Shendam Killings
From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi
A security detail attached to suspended Governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye is being held in detention by the Bauchi Police after his arrest following an indictment by one of the displaced persons in a Refugee camp in Bauchi who accused him of killing his relations in the Yelwan-Shendam ethno-religious crisis.
THISDAY reliably gathered that the aide, an Inspector of police (name withheld) was arrested while accompanying the Plateau State Sole Administrator, Major General Chris Alli (rtd) to Bauchi on a sympathy visit to the displaced victims of the states ethno-religious riot.
The victim fingered the police officer to Alli who was in the company of Bauchi State Governor Ahmadu Adamu Mu'azu which made them order the aide's immediate arrest and interrogation at the State Police Command Headquarters in Bauchi.
A source at the police headquarters disclosed that the inspector has "made useful statements," but however would not confirm whether he acted "on instructions from above or if it was in self defence."
The source added that "though the command has completed its investigation into the matter and had subsequently sent the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in both Plateau and Bauchi States, he is still been detained here at the headquarters for security reasons."
Confirming the arrest, the command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Justine Okpara told THISDAY that the Inspector has made "useful statement to the police and since the police in the state have completed their investigation into the matter, it has accordingly dispatched the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution here in the State and Plateau for advice."
Pressed to speak more on the issue, the PPRO declined further comments, saying "I cannot say much about the case, and will not tell you anything outside what I have told you now."
