Bunkering: Nwabueze to Testify June 30 By Chika Amanze-Nwachuku A Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned to June 30, trial of 13 Russians who were last October arrested for alleged illegal oil bunkering. Defence counsel, Chief Emefo Etudo, made the request for a short adjournment to enable a witness, Professor Ben Nwabueze to appear in court to give expert evidence in the ongoing trail. The defence had invited the professor, who is an expert in International Law to give expert opinion as to whether the accused persons were arrested within the Nigeria territorial waters, as alleged by the prosecution in the charge No. FHC/L/39C/2004. The witness, according to Etudo will be the last to be called by the defence which is expected to conclude its address at the next adjourned date. Following the application for adjournment, trial judge Justice Gloria Okeke, adjourned the case to June 30 for continuation of cross-examination by the defence. In a letter to the defence counsel dated June 17, 2004, Professor Nwabueze acknowledged the receipt of the letter requesting him to come and give expert opinion in the suit. He had asked for a short time to enable him prepare his opinion and then appear in court to give evidence in support of his expert opinion.
