ANPP Rejects Commission on Kwande Crisis
The opposition All Nigeria Peoples Pasrty (ANPP) has said neither the party nor any of her members would appear before the Justice Kazim Ologbo's-led Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the Benue State government to investigate the crisis in Kwande and Ukum local governments of the state.
The party in a press statement in Makurdi yesterday, called on the Federal Govenment to set up an impartial Judicial Commission of Inquiry to look into the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.
They have no confidence in the Commission of Inquiry, alleging that it is constituted to legitimise government's conduct in the local governments and nail percieved enemies.
The statement signed by the State Chairman of the party Chief Godwin Okpoju, specifically said the position of the party was predicated on two grounds.
"First, the attitude, utterances and dispositiion of the state government is not to find a lasting soluition to the crisis in Kwande Local Government"
The strategy, they alleged "is to use the "Commission" to legitimise its conduct in Kwande and nail its perceived enemies in Kwande and Ukum local governments."
The criticised the inclusion of Ukum local government as one of the local governments to be covered by the Commission saying Ukum where the crisis occured in 2003 was "brought in because of the stand of Senator Prof. Daniel Saror's call at the National Assembly for the restoratrion of law and order in Kwande local government."
The also claimed that as far as they were concerned the setting up of a Commission was diversionary, adding that, governemnt knows the true actions to take to restore peace in the local government.
According to the chairman "it is for the government to respect the wishes of the people to belong to any political party of their choice and to vote for candidates of their choice."
They also said three other members: Justice Cosmos Idye, Justice Emmanuel Ogbole (Rtd) and Barrister Anthony Ijoho are all card carrying members of the ruling PDP.
