Breakthrough in Hip Replacement Operation IMO As part of its retraining programme for members, the Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA) at the weekend commenced a hip replacement operation at Christina Specialist Hospital, Egbu, Owerri. President of the association and Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Sylvanus Amaechi led other consultant orthopaedic surgeons including Dr C. Eze of National Orthopaedic hospital, Enugu for the exercise. With the successful bi-polar operation, Nigerians are no longer required to travel abroad for the operation which Dr Amaechi said the country has the expertise, manpower and equipment to handle. According to Amaechi, some German surgeons will be arriving the country next month to understudy their Nigerian counterparts in hip replacement operations and other orthopaedic cases not common in Europe. The Europeans who will be visiting major orthopaedic centres in Nigeria will also exchange ideas with their Nigerian counterparts on the advance of the bone medicine in their home countries. The NOA president said as the Germans would be leaving the country, some Nigerian orthopaedic surgeons will be visiting America and other countries for re-training to make them conversant with the development of that sphere of medicine. Amaechi restated his assertion that Nigerians have no need to travel abroad for medical treatment when Nigerians are competent to handle all the cases.
