Agric Cooperatives Get N14m Lagos By Shaka Momodu Lagos State Government has released N14 million to the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives to promote and sustain the Fadama II project in the state to motivate farmers and fishermen to increase food production in the state. "Fadama," an Hausa word, which refer to small scale irrigation vegetable farming is a project supported by the World Bank in collaboration with federal, state and local governments to assist farmers who use irrigation in growing vegetables. Disclosing this at the weekend, while briefing members of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture on the achievement and constraint of his ministry, Commissioner for Agriculture and Co-operatives, Chief Kaoli Olusanya said the Fadama II project was designed to ensure food security in the state. Olusanya also stated that the state is enjoying comparative advantage in fishing, saying that the government had invested much in aqua-culture and homestead fishing. He disclosed that due to the state government's commitment to agriculture, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) selected Lagos as one of the two beneficiaries of the National Special Programme on Food Security (NSPFS) in Nigeria.
