Obanikoro Seeks FG's Support to Deflood Lagos
Moves motion of urgent national importance today

Still smarting from the effects of flood that took over Lagos last week, Senator Musiliu Obani-koro, representing Lagos Central senatorial district, has called on the federal government to give the state government all the necessary support to tackle the problem so as to prevent a re-occurence.
At a news conference in Lagos, Obanikoro also said because of the magnitude of the problem, he would move a motion of urgent national importance on the floor of the Senate today to seek federal government intervention.
"What happened last week calls for sober reflection. All commercial and social activities were paralysed for a whole day, while residents had difficulty moving from one place to another. Lagos is the economic nerve centre of the nation. Anything that happens here have effects on the socio-economic life of the nation. Every Nigerian must be concerned about this problem and all hands must be on deck to tackle it once and for all", he said.
Commenting on the role the National Assembly can play in addressing the problem, Obanikoro said since the National Assembly is the organ vested with the power of appropriation, bringing the problem of flood in Lagos to its attention would ensure that adequate funds are appropriated for the purpose of tackling the problem.
He noted that Govenor Bola Tinubu-led administration has been doing everything possible to address the problem in the last five years adding that its magnitude and the kind of funds needed to tackle it requires Federal Govern-ment's support.
Identifying the factors responsible for the problem, the lawmaker said because of the topography of Lagos state, which makes it to be below sea level, flooding when its rains cannot be totally avoided, but added that because of the absence of a comprehensive drainage system and the indiscipline of some residents, there is flood, even several hours after rain had stopped. "There is no how we can say that there should not be flood when it rains because of the topography of Lagos which places it below sea level, but if the federal government can give all necessary support to the state government to tackle the problem, even when its rains, flooding would not last than fifteen minutes before everything disappears", he said.
