By Bisi Lawal
Former Administrator of Lagos State, Brig.Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) has urged Nigerians to shun politics of money and elect credible and trustworthy leaders in future inorder for the country to regain its lost glory.
Speaking in Ilorin at a lecture on 'Reflections on Good Governance', the former administrator equally identified honesty, integrity, high intellectual capacity and proven record of service as some of the vital qualities those aspiring to leadership poisitions in the country must possess.
Marwa, believed to be eyeing the presidency in 2007, noted that a good leader must have the fear of God, must be humane, should be disciplined and must have the capacity to take risk in the interest of the nation.
"Having identified the crucial role of leadership towards good governance, it becomes incumbent upon us to always ensure that our votes in future elections go to Nigerians of honour, integrity, high intellectual capacity and above all, Nigerians who put God first in all their endeavours.
"We must play down the influence of money. Do not think of the N50 that will be put inside a loaf of bread and given to you on voting day, but think of the benefits that will accrue in future", he said.
Marwa also spoke on the level of poverty and corruption in the country maintaining that the on-going war against corruption must be intensified while efforts to alleviate the poverty of the people must not be relented.
While commending Presi-dent Olusegun Obasanjo's administration for its efforts in tackling these problems, he urged Nigerians to continue to support the regime adding that a successful war against corruption and pov-erty would help strengthen the nation's democracy.
He also called on the private sector to join hands with government to tackle some of the nation's problems, especially that of poverty and unemployment arguing that government alone cannot address them.
