Germany 2006: Tardelli Still Confident

Marco Tardelli is still confident Egypt can qualify for the 2006 World Cup Egypt's Italian coach Marco Tardelli believes that the Pharaohs can still make it the World Cup finals in Germany despite losing at home to the Ivory Coast. Egypt lost to Ivory Coast 1-2 in Alexandria on Sunday in their second match of the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.

They are in third place in Group Three behind top of the table Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

The Italian said that the Pharaohs deserved more from the match. "My players did their best and we did not deserve to loose this match," he said.

"The players are developing and I think we still have a chance of reaching Germany 2006." Tardelli also dismissed claims that he did not want veteran Hossam Hassan and Marseille striker Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam in his squad. "They are the ones at fault, they weren't keen to play for their country," Tardelli insisted.

Ivory Coast manager Henri Michel was more than pleased with the victory. "It's a major step on the road to reaching the World Cup finals," he said.

"The Egyptians played a world class game and we were lucky to beat them."

Michel dedicated the triumph to the memory of Mama Ouattara, their assistant coach who collapsed and died in Paris last week. "This is our gift to his soul, " he added poignantly.

The Ivory Coast are the only team in the whole Africa qualifying campaign to have won both their two matches after their 2-0 win over Libya in their opening game, next up for them is a tough trip to Cameroon on 4 July.

Egypt, who won their opener 3-0 away to Sudan, will hope to get back to winning ways on 4 July when they play Benin away from home.
