1,000 ANPP supporters decamp to PDP in Jigawa

By Abubakar Sharada

Special Correspondent, Dutse

As the All Nigeria Peoples Party crisis deepens in Jigawa State, no fewer than 1,000 of its members in Birniwa Local Government Area have decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Their grouse was the alleged injustice meted to them by the party top hierarchy.

Speaking on behalf of the decampees, Alhaji Zakari Ya’u said the reason of their decamping was that Governor Ibrahim Saminu Turaki gave appointments to a single family in the local council.

He cited the instance whereby the father and son are the vice chairman and local government chairman respectively, while the governor’s in-law is a state legislator representing Birniwa constituency.

Ya’u further explained that they convened a series of meetings with some of the government officials to solve the problems amicably. He said after exploiting various means to settle the matter without success, members had no choice than to cross over to the PDP.

Receiving the decampees in Dutse, the state capital, the State Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Usman Alto Roni, said the decampees should follow the rules and regulations of the party, assuring that the party will treat them equally.

Roni also described the cross-carpetting as a sign that PDP will win the next gubernatorial election in 2007. He said PDP in Jigawa State was populated by literate people who always acted maturely.
