    FELIX NWANERI

SENATE President, Adolphus Wabara said yesterday that if reforming Labour is one of the ways the country would enjoy debt cancellation from its creditors, Nigerians should embrace the move.

He, however, declared that the Trade Unions Act (Amendment) Bill from the Presidency was not before the National Assembly.

Wabara spoke with newsmen at the presidential lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos.

Apparently hinting at the motive for any possible government move to tamper with Labour, the Senate President said "some debt cancellation" on account of labour reforms should be acceptable to Nigerians.

"We will leave the National Assembly to decide. We are talking of debt cancellation and this goes with a lot of reforms. If Labour reforms is one of the areas that must be sacrificed such that we can enjoy some debt cancellation, then I think Nigerians should be able to sacrifice that", he said.

He said the National Assembly is yet to receive the proposed Trade Unions Act (Amendment Bill) from the Presidency, adding that it will take a decision when such bill gets to it.

On why the refrieries are yet to commence operations despite the huge amount government claimed to have expended on them since 1999, Senator Wabara said the solution to the nation’s oil sector is privatisation.

He explained that privatisation will enable private investors who work more efficiently than pubic companies to come in.

Wabara, however, stated that such privatisation will not be hurriedly implemented as Nigerians would be force to start paying high prices for petroleum products by the investors.
