Euro 2004: Greece Stun France to Reach Semi Finals By Femi Atoyebi European champions, France, were sent packing from the on-going Euro 2004 championship in Portugal by lowly rated Greece who had earlier defeated hosts Portugal in group A opener. France started the game rather casually and it was Greece who seized the initiative contesting and winning possessions. A goal from Charisteas in the second half shocked the title defenders as Greece qualified for the semi final for the first time in the nation's football history. The first chance of the match came in the fifth minute when a Fyssas cross sailed only just over the head of forward Charisteas. A good chance for the Greeks and France were warned. The French got their first good chance in the 24th minute when Lizarazu crossed from the left wing and Thierry Henry jumped higher than Seitardis, but his header went past the right post. Throughout the first half, Greece had been the dominant side while France were struggling to reach their forwards. France were more dangerous in the opening phase of the second half and after four minutes Henry tried to shoot on goal but his attempt was deflected by a defender. A corner however, was not given. In the 65th minute, Zagorakis defeated his direct opponent on the right wing, and perfectly crossed to Charisteas who performed a good header which was impossible for Barthez to save. France were World Champions in 1998 when they hosted and won the European championship two years later in Holland and Belgium.
