Scrabble Grand Masters Ends Today
By Ayodeji Fashikun

The Nigerian Scrabble Grandmasters yesterday finally went underway with a round of seven matches while today, the final day, will witness eight rounds of games to determine Nigeria's Master and the team to contest for the African title later in the year in Dar-es-Salam in Tanzania.

The championship which kicked-off at SportsShaq in Surulere-Lagos had in attendance 14 of the nation's best players though with the conspicuous absence of the defending champion, Jimoh Saheed.

According to the President of the Scrabble Federation of Nigeria, Engineer Toke Aka, "the defending champion (Jimoh Saheed)was not able to make it due to work pressures.

At the end of the first day, new words played include: Steever, Tarrows, Ostinato, Sprangle, Sandlot, Antiwear, Aulnager, Roseate, Pontiles, Quartzes, Spangled, Trangled, Viand, Chimers, Convo, Plucking and Demy.

The day's highest game score went to Faloye Ibukun who got 508. Meanwhile, Frank Ishekwene, a analyst of the game, has predicted the master to emerge between three players simply identified as Ogbogu Azu, Oshodi Sunday or Adekunle Ayox. Though, with the results at the end of the first day, an outsider in the winner of the Adamawa Opens, Dennis Ikekeregor, is in keen contest.
