Environmental Abuse: Business Districts for Renewal - Tinubu By Shaka Momodu Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has set August as the date for the commencement of the planned renewal of Central Business District in Lagos as part of efforts to improve the environmental situations of businesses in the state. Tinubu, who received the management of the Hallmark Bank Plc led by its Executive Director, Mr Edward Ajayi, in his office, said his administration was committed to creating an enabling environment for business to thrive, while formulating better polices that promote economic activities. While urging the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to contribute their quota towards ensuring that the targets set by the state government in meeting the needs of an ever increasing population are met, the governor added that though state's vast population represents value for business, meeting the challenges of their demand posed immense liability for government. Explaining that any investment by businesses or by those with riches and wealth would be jeopardised if it is not matched by a corresponding investment in providing for the poor. Tinubu said a situation where taxes are not remitted and businesses do not show concern is unacceptable. He said both Victoria Island and Ikoyi with vast business presence are under significant threat, noting that to meet the enormous challenges demand that business be more socially responsible. Stating that there was a need to expand the frontiers of corporate responsibilities. The governor then suggested the adoption of such concept as "school adoption" programme, and the introduction of developmental bond for street maintenance for achieving the desired goals.
