Scandal Rocks Defence Committee over N9m Lobby From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja House of Representatives may have been rocked by yet another financial scandal as N9 million belonging to the House Committee on Defence was allegedly collected to ensure that the Bill on Armed Forces Commission was not allowed to see the light of the day. The bill, which was sponsored by Hon Chudi Ofodile, was according to sources, nailed once the idea was mooted and the particulars submitted to the House for verification and eventual listing. Contacted, Chairman of the Committee, Hon Wale Oke, dismissed the allegation as rumour, which was aimed at distracting the Committee, adding that "we are focused and are working very hard to attend to the needs of our areas of oversight." The chairman, who said he was out of Abuja at the time of contact by phone, said such rumours should be discountenanced, as it did not contain any iota of truth more so since the report of his committee was still being awaited on the bill after the public hearing on the matter. Sources within the committee however said the allegation was true and that things fell apart when the entire N9 million was not declared by some powerful members as only N6 million of the amount was accounted for. The bill was said to have been opposed by the military, which moved and allegedly lobbied the politicians with the money to ensure that the Armed Forces Commission was not created by law.
