New US Ambassador Resumes Duties From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja A new United States Amba-ssador to Nigeria, John Campbell, has resumed duties. Ambassador Campbell who presented his credentials to President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday in Abuja replaces former US Ambassador Howard Jeter. This is Campbell's second time in Nigeria, after serving as political Counsellor in Lagos between 1988-1990. That assignment he said gave him an appreciation of the "enormous ingenuity, diversity and dynamism of the Nigerian people". A release from the United States Embassy states that Campbell in characterising the importance of Nigeria to the US, notes Nigeria's return to civilian government in 1999, its religious and cultural diversity, economic potential and energy reserves as well as leadership role within the African Union and Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS). Campbell had in the past held overseas postings in South Africa, Lyon, Paris and Geneva. He was Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Human Resources in 2001 before his posting to Nigeria and was also Dean, School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute and Deputy Executive Secretary, Director of UN Political Affairs respectively.
