'Democracy Has Improved Nigeria-US Ties' From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Obas-anjo has said the restoration of democracy to Nigeria five years ago has enabled the normalisation of relations between Nigeria and the United States of America and strengthened cooperation between the two countries. The President was speaking after the new ambassador of the United States to Nigeria, Mr John Campbell presented his letters of credence at State House yesterday. He said several areas of previously dormant activity had been resuscitated, and attributed this to the efforts of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. President Obasanjo thanked the US government for support in the areas of HIV/AIDS, military cooperation, debt relief and the search for peace in Africa, describing Nigeria's role in the search for peace as a "responsibility we shoulder in the interest of all." Responding, the new US Ambassador said the outside world was impressed with the efforts of President Obasanjo to turn the country around, especially the fight against corruption, HIV/AIDS and the performance of the economic tea. He also commended the progress in the fight against drugs. Also yesterday, President Obasanjo told the new Russian Federation Ambas-sador to the country, Mr Igov Alexandrovich that more areas of cooperation should be explored between the two nations. He said trade delegations should be exchanged as a way of accelerating trade relations. The new Ambassador said he would take advantage of the warm relations between Presidents Obas-anjo and Vladimir Putin, to improve cooperation.
