Lawyers Boycott Courts in Sokoto
From Ahmed Oyerinde in Sokoto
Sokoto State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced its boycott of courts in protest over suspension and posting of some magistrates in the state judiciary.
In a two page letter written to the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Aishatu Dahiru, a copy of which was made available to THISDAY, the association gave the state Chief Judge two weeks within which to reverse the situation otherwise it would channel its grievances elsewhere.
The state NBA, in its letter, signed by its chairman and assistant secretary, Chief Dafe Abobo and A.M. Lamido respectively, recalled the meeting its delegation had with the Chief Judge on the 18th of this month, over the matter as well as the response of the Chief Judge to the effect that she was not answerable to NBA.
"Your reported answer was a bitter pill for us to swallow, considering the fact that members of the NBA/judiciary are joint stakeholders in the administration of justice."
It added that since it was the view of the Chief Judge that the judiciary is not an extension of the NBA and that its members are mere busy bodies "then we will take his her lordship at her words and refuse to participate in the demolishing and rubbishing of the judiciary.
Meanwhile, the state government had reacted to the NBA's decision to boycott courts' activities and called on the association to reconsider its decision and return to courts.
In a press statement dated 25th of June and signed by the Special Adviser legal Matters, Hon. Suleiman Usman, the state government said as ministers in the temple of justice, the NBA members are under a sacred duty to rise above primordial interest.
"Cases are being adjourned in courts daily, prisons are becoming congested due to non-appearance of lawyers. We urged the NBA to embrace dialogue and resolve whatever problems they have with the state judiciary over the suspension and posting of Magistrates."
Contacted, the state chief judge, Justice Aishatu Dahiru said she had no explanation to give now adding "I am compiling my reports and after that I will channel it to the appropriate quarters."
