Group Commends Egwu

A group, Igbo Unity Forum (IUF) has commended Governor Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State for his commitment to the defence of the rights of Igbo and other non-indigenes who were at the receiving end of sectarian violence which swept through Kano State last month.
In a statement signed by Mr Ifeanyi Ezeudu and Chuks Madueke, leader and acting publicity secretary respectively, the group expressed delight that despite "attempts to intimidate the governor's popular, humane and kind stand by the unrepentant and callous comments of those whose responsibility it was to avert the crisis in the first place," the Ebonyi helmsman has proven to be unmoved.
The statement while recounting the events that led to the Kano riots, regretted that the Igbo were always made to bear the brunt of such "ethno-religious excesses" each time even though they hardly foment trouble in their host communities.
'It is very sad that each time the northern part of the country boils for whatever reason, the Igbos maybe because of the usually large size of their population amongst other non-indigenes, are used as scapegoats for reprisal actions," the statement read.
Continuing, it said "the maturity displayed by Governor Egwu in defending not only the interests of the Igbos but that of other non-indigenes affected in the crisis showed him as one leader the Igbo can genuinely trust."
The statement also advised high ranking political office holders to be mindful of their utterances during and in the aftermath of ethno-religious crisis "in order not to escalate the pains of those affected and not to reverse gains made in containing the crisis."
It therefore called for restraint, fairness and caution on the part of leaders charged with maintaining law and order in their states and "avoid unnecessarily taking on those genuinely committed to fighting the cause of their people who elected them into office."
