Anti-Torture Day: FG Urged to Ratify Protocol By Abimbola Akosile Federal Government has been called upon to ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and incorporate its provisions as part of the nation's domestic laws, in a bid to prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman treatment in places of detention all over the country. The call, which focused on the UN theme, "Together Against Torture," was contained in a statement issued by Mr. Chino Obiagwu, National Coordinator of Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), a human rights organisation that promotes and protects human rights, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria. "As the world marks the United Nations Day in support of victims of torture on June 26, LEDAP condemns the rising incidents of torture and associated violations of the rights to life and security in Nigeria. Both the police and armed militias in ethnic and religious conflicts usually commit these violations across the country," he stated. While calling on police authorities and government to take urgent steps to arrest, prosecute and punish all those who perpetrate torture, LEDAP advocated independent civil oversight of the police and other law enforcement agencies, with the Police Service Commission strengthened and positioned in every local government area to receive and process complaints from the citizens of mistreatment and torture by police.
