From Josephine Lohor in Abuja
President Olusegun Obasa-njo yesterday, held a closed-door meeting with the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Joseph Kabila and that of Rwanda, Paul Kagame to broker peace between both countries.
A major highlight of the meeting which was at the instance of President Obasanjo and which held at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Internati-onal Airport, Abuja, for over three hours, was the agreement by the Presidents of Congo and Rwanda to rededicate themselves to the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement signed about two years ago.
The Pretoria Agreement provides among others that all troops from Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) be withdrawn; and these countries should desist from supporting insurgency in Congo; and that they should also assist in the repatriation of refugees and demobilisation of rebels found in their respective countries.
Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambass-ador Olu Adeniji, who read a press statement after the meeting which former President of Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abub-akar, also attended, stated that "after discussions in an atmosphere of cordiality and a review of all the issues, President Kagame and President Kabila re-committed themselves to the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement."
President Olusegun Obas-anjo, while thanking both presidents for accepting the invitation at such short notice and for giving it the attention it deserves, stated that establishing a joint verification mechanism and examining what have been implemented in the Pretoria Agreement should be done expeditiously to ensure an atmosphere of confidence between the two countries and their leaders.
On his part, President Kabila said that reconstituting the national army in his country has been dealt with in line with the agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa.
