Ownership of Calabar: Efik Affirm Nativity Rights
From Amby Uneze in Calabar

As the controversy over the ownership of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State rages, the Efiks have vowed to discipline their other two brothers, the Quas and Efuts, describing them as charlatans who refused to learn from their (Efiks) wise ideas.

The three major tribes in Calabar have in recent times been pointing accusing fingers at one another, and accusing one another of being tenants in Calabar.

In the fight for the ownership of the city, the Quas and Efuts are jointly accusing the Efiks of being their tenants and as such should be mindful of the fact that they are not the land owners.

Addressing newsmen in Calabar on Thursday, spokesman of Efik Eburutu Consultative Assembly (EECA), Dr Ambrose Akpanika eulogised the role of the Efiks in the making of Calabar, adding that they (Efiks) brought development and civilisation to the area.

EECA, a pan-Efik movement, maintained that they expected the Quas and Efuks to take advantage of educational development, but regretted that such was not the case.

"In the hospitality business, the Efik will never regret the development in terms of civilisation and education to the people of Calabar including the Quas and the Efuts, but they did not take advantage of it," Akpanika said.

He, however, described the claims by the Quas and the Efuts as "arrant nonsense," stressing that it was only an exhibition of not only ignorance but disrespect to a senior brother.
