Lorry Crushes Two Cars In Lagos
BY OLUSEYE OLUMIDE
LIVERPOOL Roundabout in Apapa area of Lagos State witnessed another serious accident on Thursday, with a loaded articulated lorry crushing a Golf Volkswagen Saloon car and denting an Audi Saloon.
The Golf was wrecked and the custom's officer at the back seat was seriously injured. His driver, however, escaped with minor injuries, but the driver of the Audi was luckier as he sustained no injuries.
The three vehicles are Lagos-registered. The lorry, a Renault, was marked: BE 602 AGL; the Golf, VV 169 APP and the Audi, XA 910 YEN.
Policemen and sympathizers who rushed to the scene extricated the Customs officer from the wreckage.
They took him to the near-by Lagoon Hospital on Marine Road.
Liverpool Roundabout is an intersection of three major roads - Liverpool, Marine and Olorogun Michael Ibru Boulevard (formerly Creek Road). It also has the Wharf-Mile 2 bridge over the roundabout.
About three months ago, an articulated lorry moving from Apapa Quays to Mile 2 "flew" from the overhead bridge and crushed a saloon car, killing four people, among them a cart pusher.
Immediately after the accident, the driver of the lorry jumped down and escaped.
The crowd, using cranes, axes and crowbars, worked for nearly an hour to extricate the Customs officer trapped in the mangled car.
The terribly shaking driver of the Audi, Mr. Jubril Adazi, told The Guardian that the lorry apparently had a break failure as it descended the convoluted ramp, ramming into the Golf car.
He urged the government to find a solution to the incessant cases of articulated lorries either falling off the over-head bridge or ramming other vehicles against the concrete of the roundabout while descending.
According to Adazi, "lorries are too many on this road and most of them are not road-worthy any longer. Moreover those carrying containers are not always properly latched, leading to accidents.
