THE leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South East has directed the Abia State House of Assembly to stay action on the impeachment move against the state deputy governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor. The directive was part of the decision reached at the end of its meeting in Umuahia.
National vice chairman of the party in the South-East, Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu presided over the meeting which was also attended by the deputy governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Chigozie Ogbu and his Imo State counterpart, Chief Ebere Udeagu, as well as chairmen of the party in the five South-East states. The leadership of the Abia House of Assembly was also there.
Chukwu said that it was ironical that the House of Assembly was continuing with the impeachment when the state governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu had asked them to discontinue the process.
He said: “The governor has disassociated himself from the move. We have been pleading with them to stop it. This impeachment is unpopular. The party is not happy about it. We know that it is their constitutional right, but they cannot have a right when the party discipline is involved. “This is a political party. It is a family. Even if they have a right, the issue in contention can be settled privately. We want to get this thing behind us. It is unfortunate that we have crisis everytime and this crisis is unnecessary.
Those who elected us are watching us. Instead of solving their problems, we are talking of sharing money everytime.”
Speaker of the House, Chief Stanley Ohajuruka said that the lawmakers also believe in the supremacy of the party, adding that the issue as directed by the zonal leadership of PDP, would be tabled before the House for other actions to follow in line with the feelings of the party leadership.
