We’ll continue to harass ‘em, Okorie vows

Stories by Celestine OkaforAssistant Editor

NATIONAL chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie also opines that the opposition in Nigeria is a potent force out to check the excesses of government.

We have not given them (PDP government) any breathing space and we won’t do so until they decide to do the right thing for the benefit of the people. Our party has been in the forefront of the opposition against the PDP everywhere in Nigeria and this fact is well known to everybody. In the various states where APGA is popular like the South East, for instance, PDP has never had it good with us. It has been one battle after the other.

In Anambra State, you are already aware that our candidate, Peter Obi was the most preferred governorship candidate and the people showed it in their votes but the PDP manipulated the whole thing and returned their own and you know that they have not had peace among themselves ever since.

In Imo State, the same thing happened, not to talk of other elections into the national and state assemblies where our candidates won landslide in our areas of control but the whole thing was rigged by the PDP. In the presidential election, APGA won a substantial part of the votes that would have made it impossible for Obasanjo to emerge. The Ikemba (Ojukwu) was voted for by nearly two third of the voters and on the basis of that among other factors, we went to court to challenge Obasanjo’s so-called victory. So, we have come a long way in this opposition thing and we are not about to give up on it.
Therefore, if you ask me, I would say that we may have one or two instances that may differ from popular expectations, but the coalition body has done very well.

When occasion demands, APGA will oppose through the common platform called the CNPP. I want to tell you something. There is no way you can steal somebody’s thing and expect to have peace. It is not possible. The kind of election organised by the PDP government has made it impossible to achieve national peace and stability. The way they rigged themselves to power makes it  imperative for the opposition to even flourish. The opposition will continue to haunt and harass them for good.
