"We have not, as a party, zoned 2007 to any zone or state to the best of my knowledge. Definitely, it will not be to the South-West. When the time comes, the PDP will put its heads together and decide where the next president will come from."

But reacting to this position, Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Inuwa Labaran, said President Obasanjo was speaking for himself. He expressed shock at what he termed the president’s "apparent denial of the party’s concluded arrangement to zone power to the North in 2007."
Labara said President Obasanjo was not speaking for PDP, stating: "Whatever Obasanjo said is not the view of the party, neither was it with its authority. When the next sitting of the PDP caucus comes, the president shall lick his vomit."

Speaking in the same vein on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service, a chieftain of the PDP, Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim, called President Obasanjo a liar.

According to Ibarahim, "Obasanjo has manifested his true picture as a person who does not care what happens to the North and Nigeria now that he is in his second term in office. This is nothing short of deceit and display of tyranny and lack of sincerity and truthful leadership."
The PDP stalwart said the best way to checkmate President Obasanjo was the "commencement of a sovereign national conference where Nigerians will air their views and proffer lasting solution to Obasanjo’s dictatorial administration which came to power through fake votes."

It would be recalled that before President Obasanjo’s declaration last Sunday, the North and South-East have been trading words on which zone to produce the president in 2007. While the South-East said equity and fair play demanded that the zone produced Obasanjo’s successor, the North posited that the position was given to it during PDP’s zoning arrangement in 1999. Ever since, politicians from other geopolitical zones had spoken in favour of either the South-East or North.
