Reps plan bill to check fire outbreak in buildings
From John-Abba Ogbodo, Abuja

A BILL on installation of fire detective and prevention equipment in buildings in Nigeria is being harmonised by the House of Representatives.

Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Osita Izunaso, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja.

Izunaso spoke while inspecting a housing estate in Nyanya, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory (FTC) razed by fire on Thursday last week.

He lamented that the nation had lost so much resources, both human and materials to fire.

The lawmaker stressed that it was time that urgent and practical steps were taken to address the problem.

He said as soon as the National Assembly reconvenes next month, the bill will be taken to the floor for debate.

Izunaso further said that the bill, if passed, would save the nation the agonising experience of incessant fire incidents.

Explaining further, the panel chief said the bill requires all housing estates to be fitted with fire detection and prevention gadgets.

It also specifies that all buildings must have clearly defined access that could facilitate smooth operation for fire-fighters in times of urgency.

The proposed law, he added, has everything it takes by international standard to drastically reduce cases of fire outbreaks in buildings.

He praised the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for putting the machinery in motion for the reconstruction of the effected buildings.
