LAGOS—FOLLOWING the distress call for a financial lifeline issued by the management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, indications have emerged that the federal government may have begun to initiate moves to wade into the affairs of the crisis-ridden tertiary health institution even as there is yet to be an end in sight to the indefinite strike embarked upon by over 2,500 workers of the institution to protest non-payment of a combination of arrears of allowances and their May 2004 salary.
Top on the workers’ demand is the payment of arrears of the 22 per cent Harmonised Tertiary Institution’s Salary Structure (HATISS) among other grievances bordering on welfare.
Giving the hint that government at the top was set to intervene in the crisis, Minister of Health, Prof. Eyitayo Lambo noted that the current situation was being monitored. Disclosing this in an interview with Vanguard, the Minister who admitted that government was not unmindful of the unfolding development at the institution, however declined to state specifically in what way government was stepping into the crisis.
