Varsity bed space: Fees must be realistic — OSUJI

By Chinyere Amalu
Wednesday, June 30, 2004

ABUJA — AS Nigerians await the release of the report of the committee on the N10,000 bed space fee in universities, students may still have much to worry about as the Education Minister, Prof. Fabian Osuji has insisted that hostel accommodation fees must be a realistic amount if at all there would be any charges.

The minister who disclosed this on Tuesday at a ministerial press briefing in Abuja said N90.00 currently being charged is as good as no payment, saying the charges must be reviewed to effect a long term development as well as provide better living environment for students in the universities.

“The N90,00 students pay now means we are not charging any fees at all. We have to talk about a realistic fee if we are going to charge any. It is not even about charging fees alone, we are concerned about long term development of hostel accommodation and other facilities on campuses,” he said.

Osuji stated that the report which have been submitted to President Obasanjo a couple of months ago for final decision would soon be made public.

Commenting on the recent introduction of compulsory entrepreneurial courses for university undergraduates, the minister explained it was all aimed at equipping them to become self-sustaining and employers of labour.

“With the Entrepreneurial Education, we are trying to promote technical and vocational education to make people more competent and employable on graduation.”

The minister stated that for the Education for All (EFA) by 2015, all levels of education in Nigeria, especially the non-formal ones should be given equal status and recognition by the federal government.

In view of this, he said, this administration has shown a lot of commitments to setting up series of commissions at all levels such as the UBE, the Mass Literacy programmes, Girl child education.
