Chairman and
Secretary General United States of America (USA) chapter of ruling Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Tex Wariboko and Dr. Stanley Onye have been suspended
from office.
Their suspension followed a motion for
same moved by one Theophilus Olaokpu and seconded by Chuck Chuckuemeka, adopted
at an emergency general meeting held Monday at New Jersey, after a vote of no
confidence was passed on them in May, at Atlanta, Georgia.
The action further compounds crisis, which
has trailed the chapter since inception.
Mr. Wariboko and Dr. Onye were accused of
illegally creating more branches of the party in contravention of the party’s
constitution. Already, the party has 14 branches in the USA.
Moving the motion, Mr. Olaokpu said,
"Whereas a vote of no confidence was raised on May 22, 2004 in Atlanta and
seconded against the Chairman Tex Wariboko and General Secretary, Dr. Stanley
Onye, and whereas this motion was re-read and re-affirmed in New Jersey on this
day June 26, 2004, and whereas a committee will be set up to investigate the
issues and allegations raised; a motion is hereby raised to suspend the Chairman
Tex Wariboko as the Chairman and Dr. Stanley Onye as the General Secretary".
Meanwhile, deputy Chairperson, Mrs.
Felicia Mbanaja-Hadjesmaili becomes Acting Chairwoman, while Chief Eddy Nwosu
will act as General Secretary pending conclusion of investigations.
The meeting was however boycotted by Mr.
Wariboko and Dr. Onye despite notification.
Chapter Treasurer, Chief George Akunna,
alleged the duo deliberately boycotted the meeting even as the Dr. Onye
questioned its constitutionality.
"The chairman and general secretary were
duly informed of the meeting in accordance with the spirit and letter of the PDP
Constitution. The general secretary was preoccupied with the constitutionality
of the meeting when it was obvious that 65 percent of Chapter Executive
Committee members were not satisfied with the direction of the party" he said.
According to Publicity Secretary of the
chapter, Sir Ike Ginigeme, "two-thirds of Central Working Committee (CWC) and
Chapter Executive Committee (CEC) called the meeting to address a vote of no
confidence moved against the Chairman, Mr. Wariboko and Dr. Onye for allegedly
contravening party Constitution".
However, Chairman of Dallas/Fort Worth
branch, Mr. Victor Emuahkagbon, at the emergency meeting, restated the
allegations.
Following the suspensions, the meeting nullified all decisions taken at a
meeting held at Atlanta on June 19, where creation of the offending branches was
done.
It also set up an investigative committee
to look into the allegations adding that if cleared, the suspension will be
lifted.
