CULTURE and Tourism Minister, Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, has said Nigeria loses about $2 million (N300 million) every month to pirates, especially in the publishing and movie industries. In a keynote address at the launch of a monthly magazine, AMITY in Abuja on Tuesday, Ogbuewu lamented the activities of pirates, declaring that it had become worse than the notorious Advance Fee Fraud (419). He said time had come for all segments of the society to fight pirates, stating that their activities had destroyed the ambition of many young Nigerians, especially in the publishing and movie industries. We must fight pirates with every available weapon because they have frustrated many young men and women in the quest to reap where they did not sow, he added. Speaking further, the minister said government through the ministry of culture and tourism was making efforts to repatriate movies realised by pirates who hawk Nigerian books and monies abroad. On the AMITY magazine, the minister said it was pursuing acommendable goal of assisting black people in the diaspora to trace their roots. He observed that most of the black people across the world had their roots in Nigeria, adding that the Nigerian government was ready to assist such black people who trace their roots to Nigeria. Even if they are not coming back to stay in Nigeria, we want them to visit us as tourists and interact freely with their black brothers after a long sujourn in the land of whites, he added. Earlier, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, Mr. Paul Chukwuma, had said the magazine was published by a consortium of publishers to propagate the cause of the black race.
