THE NATION

Abacha was a nationalist Ekwueme

JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU, Calabar

SECOND Republic Vice- President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme has described former head of state, General Sani Abacha, as the only leader that believed in equity and fair play among the six geo-graphical zones in the country.

Ekwueme, who spoke on the occasion of the 50th birthday of Governor Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State on Monday, said despite the criticisms that trailed his regime, Abacha believed in the equitable distribution of resources among the six geographical zones.

Although Ekwueme said he was among the vocal politicians who condemned the seeming dictatorial tendencies of Abacha, the late head of state tried as much as possible to carry all the six zones along which was even manifested in the creation of additional six states in 1995 each from every zone.

Gen. Abacha was the only Head of State who believes in the six zonal arrangement in Nigeria.

During the constitutional conference, he restated the importance of six zones, he declared.

Ekwueme, who was an apostle of the creation of the six zones, submitted that the idea was to carry every zone along in the sharing of the national cake.

In 1995, Abacha created six states each from every zone, Ebonyi for the South-East, Bayelsa for South-South, Ekiti for South-West and Gombe, Nasarawa and Zamfara for the three geo-graphical zones in the North, he further stated.

The Second Republic Vice-President and a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said he was delighted to be part of the epoch-making celebration as Gov. Egwu has distinguished himself among his colleagues.

According to him, governance was not about noise making but ability to apply ones intellectual wisdom for the benefits of the common people, expressing satisfaction over the delivering of democratic dividends by the governor.

Also speaking, a one time presidential aspirant in the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), Dr. Joe Nwodo, commended Egwu for the tremendous reformation he has embarked upon since 1999.

Nwodo said the governors leadership style had galvanised a new leadership of dynamism and optimism, adding that Ebonyi State had become the political Mecca of Igboland.
