...'Reforms Backed With Legislations' Finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said benefits from the ongoing economic reforms will subsist because such reforms are being backed with appropriate legislations. "We are lacking in such reforms and derivable gains with necessary legislations and as such, have boosted investors' confidence in the scheme,'' the minister said in Umuahia at the weekend. Okonjo-Iweala, who was speaking at a gala night organised by the Abia state government as part of activities marking the 75th anniversary of Government College Umuahia, said the measure would prevent arbitrary changes in the programme. She said that such solid assurance was required by both foreign and local investors as was witnessed in the South East Asian countries of Malaysia and Singapore. The minister called for patience and understanding by Nigerians, saying that the current hardship being experienced by the people would be over with time. "There is visible light at the end of the tunnel. There will be more positive results in 2005 and so Nigerians should please bear with us," she said. Earlier, Abia Governor, Dr Orji Kalu, had expressed belief that the privatisation programme and other economic reforms would help revamp the nation's economy.
