Ibori: FCT Chief Judge, SSS DG, Others Testify Today
From Lillian Okenwa in Abuja

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, has subpoenaed the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Lawal Gumi, the Director General of the Department of the State Security Service (SSS), Col. Kayode Are (retired) and some other persons to testify in the identification trial initiated against the Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori.

The trial is aimed at uncovering the person really tried and convicted by a Bwari Upper Area Court in Bwari, FCT on September 28, 1995.

Also summoned to appear before the Court today is a commissioner with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who was asked to come and tender some records in the possession of the commission.

Also the judge who tried one James Onannefe Ibori in 1995 at the Bwari Upper Area Court, Justice Awal Yusuf, and the Secretary of the National Population Commission (NPC) were summoned.

The affected people are expected to appear before Justice Hussein Murkthar who issued the subpoena at the instance of two Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Chieftains, Goodnews Agbi and Anthony Alabi.

Meanwhile, National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Audu Ogbe, the party's National Secretary, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor have risen to the defence of Governor James Ibori.

In a statement of defence, which they filed at the Court, the duo said Ibori was qualified to seek reelection into the office of Delta State Governor adding that the certified true copy of the judgment of the Bwari Upper Area Court was inadmissible to prove that Governor Ibori was the person actually convicted.

However, Agbi and Alabi in their statement of claim maintained that one James Onanefe Ibori was convicted on September 28, 1995 at the Upper Area Court in Bwari for negligent conduct and criminal breach of trust and sentenced to one-year imprisonment or N1000.00 fine.

The statement of claim which was filed on behalf of the Plaintiffs reads, "The plaintiffs aver that James Onanefe Ibori was convicted on the 28th September, 1995 as stated in the proceeding paragraph was the same James Onanefe Ibori who is the incumbent Governor of Delta State."
