Britain Pledges Cooperation with Niger-Delta
British Government has pledged to improve relationship between the people of the South-South geo-political zone and the United Kingdom.(UK)
Deputy Director, British Council, Nigeria, Mr Peter Brown made the pledge yesterday in Port Harcourt at this year's receipients of the prestiqious British Chevening scholarships in the country.
He also reiterated the United Kingdom's firm's commitment to supporting Nigeria's political, economic and social development.
Brown further expressed the British firm commitment to remaining active and engaged in all parts of Nigeria, including the South- South.
In Nigeria, he made known that the : foreign and commonwealth office of the united kingdom had spent over N360 million on the British Chevening Scholarship programme for the last three years.
Brown Council disclosed that in the past 20years which the programme has been in operation in Nigeria over 700 young Nigerian professionals had benefited from the scholarship.
According to him, the British Council in Nigeria receive almost 10,000 _expression of interest per year for the programme for 40 places, adding that Nigeria has the highest number of scholarship award in Sub - Saharan Africa .
"These are in my view impressive statistics, and are another demon stration of the UK'S firm commitment to supporting Nigeria's political, economic and social development" he declared.
Brown observed that the one year study at the United Kingdom has open a new fiesta in the life of the beneficials and afforded them the opportunity of building a new relationships and formed bonds.
He called for more applications from the people of the South-South part of the Country including women in chevening scholarship scheme saying that the essence of the programme is about building lasting relationship between the respective countries.
