FG Releases N4b for Unity Schools' Facelift Federal Government has released N4 billion (N30 to N40 million each) to the 102 Unity Colleges for their rehabilitation and re-equipment . Minister of Education, Professor Fabian Osuji, who disclosed this at the 2004 Ministerial Press Briefing yesterday in Abuja said additional classrooms, laboratories and dormitories are also being provided for each school to improve their facilities. Osuji also revealed that during the current year, N40 billion is being expended on the Federal Government Colleges, in order to improve their teaching and learning environments in consonance with government's determination to enhance quality in education delivery at this level. "The feeding and maintenance of the students are being considerably improved. For instance, the meal subsidy for students and provision for overhead cost in each institution have been increased manifold. (A typical Unity College that last year received N13.4 million as meal subsidy has this year received N32.2 million, an increase of almost 300 per cent. Likewise for overhead cost where a school that received N3 million last year has now received N8.4 million, an increase of almost 300 per cent)", he said. He said in 2003 the Universal Basic Education scheme recorded 27 per cent increase in enrollment of primary school level to 24,563,004 pupils. UBE the minister further noted also supported 7,740 community self-help projects covering all Local Government Areas, that is 10 per LGA.
