AD Goes Tough on IBB, Atiku Campaigners
From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan
National Executive Council of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) will meet next week in Abuja to deliberate on errant members campaigning for the PDP presidential candidates despite warning from the party to the contrary.
National Chairman of the party, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, who disclosed this in Ibadan yesterday, said the meeting would decide the appropriate punishment for party members who refused to quit the campaign team of the PDP presidential candidates.
Akinfenwa, in Ibadan to address party members said AD members have been barred from campaigning for General Ibrahim Babangida, Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Brigadier Buba Marwa who are non-AD members.
According to him: "Any AD member campaigning for these people are undermining our party, they are not helping us at all, they are mischievous people who are only looking for what to eat.
"In fact, we are meeting next week in Abuja to decide what to do with these AD Campaigners and we are going to deal with them distinctively" he said. Akinfenwa however, declared that AD as a party has nothing against Babangida, Atiku, Marwa and others, "what we are saying is that, these people are not our party members, why should we campaign for them, if they want to join AD, they are welcome but they will face screening along with other candidates."
The Chairman also explained that at the appropriate time, AD will produce its own Presidential candidate. "We don't want to make the same mistake we made when AD supported Obasanjo in 2003, we don't want to lose focus.
On the crisis within the party, Akinfenwa said it will soon be a thing of the past. According to him, Afenifere leaders have intervened and the end of the crisis is in sight." Said he: "Akande is my friend, he has the constitutional right to contest the election but he should have done that at Abuja convention, however, there is no problem, he will soon embrace me."
Akinfenwa however ruled out the possibility of the party having another convention as canvassed by some party leaders.
"I will not negotiate my Chairmanship for anything, those canvassing for another conventional are mischievous, we will have non - elective convention in accordance with the constitution" he said.
