'Introduce Insurance into Schools' Curricula'
By Nnamdi Duru

The Federal Government has been advised to introduce a compulsory course in insurance in the school curriculum to raise the level of insurance awareness and enhance development.

An insurance practitioner, Mr Daniel Ogbonoko, made the call in Lagos yesterday in a paper he presented at a two-day seminar organised by Nicon Insurance Corporation and also sought the assistance of the media in creating greater awareness on the advantages of insurance.

In his paper titled, "Personal Life Insurances: The Need for Public Enlightenment", Ogbonoko, said "insurance is a pool of similar risks and upon payment of a little consideration called premium, the unfortunate few are compensated".

He also observed that untapped life insurance business opportunities abound in the country, adding that "the percentage of individual life assurance in Nigeria is only about two per cent. It means that we have a great life business untapped outside".

Lamenting the level of ignorance on the subject of insurance even among the educated and rich, Ogbonoko encouraged the Federal Government to introduce compulsory insurance studies in schools as a means of increasing the level of insurance awareness.

"Government should embark on programme to include insurance as general studies in schools because many educated persons claim ignorance of insurance knowledge, hence the poor awareness amongst the high, educated and wealthy Nigerians", he said.

"The press should join us in our campagin to create greater awareness and sensitise the public on the advantages of insurance to the individual, the organisation and the nation", Ogbonoko said.
