'Dispense Justice Without Fear or Favour' Acting Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Honourable Justice Aloy Nwankwo, has charged chairmen and members of Customary Courts in the state to discharge their duties without fear, favour, affection or ill-will to all manners of people. Declaring open a three-day workshop for chairmen and members of the customary courts on Monday, Justice Nwankwo said as umpires, they were bound to be fair, firm and always guided by the principles of fair hearing and justice, and avoid the temptation of entertaining matters above their jurisdiction. He said state Judiciary was set to deal decisively with any erring chairman and member who are found wanting in the discharge of their duties. Nwakwo said they should bear in mind that the judiciary is widely regarded as the last hope of the common man, and that can only be maintained when equality before the law, rule of law and supremacy of the law are allowed to prevail. He disclosed that the monitoring team set up by him to tour judicial divisions, Magistrate's as well as Customary Courts in the state will soon turn in their reports, which will help in the repositioning effort of the state Judiciary. He said the training programme was approved to ensure that they improve their capacity in case management. Nwakwo said the aim of the workshop was to train participants in the practice of fair hearing, jurisdiction of customary courts in Ebonyi State, institution and trial of criminals and civil cases and matters in the customary courts, judgment writing and the principals of sentencing. The workshop would also throw more light on bail issue, injunctions, contempt, practice and procedure and the evidence of corruption in the customary courts.
