Be Accountable to the People, Kalu Charges LG Chairmen Abia State governor, Chief. Orji Uzor Kalu has sworn-in the 17 local government chairmen in the state charging them to be peaceful in the conduct of the affairs of that, councils as well a ensure that their administration is transparent and accountable to the people. Kalu who expressed dismay that some council chairmen have in the recent past seen their position as instruments for self-enrichment, however said that his administration would monitor the performance to ensure that the people were not short-changed. He said his administration was placing a greater premium in ensuring the effective performance of local government councils because it sees the councils as the fulcrum for rural development, which would impact positively on the lives of the people. The governor pointed out that the present realities are that no chairman with any selfish ambition will survive the present scrutiny put in place by government to curb the excesses of government officials. �Let me also warn that it is expected of you to keep the account of your councils tidy at all times. In addition, no council chairman will be allowed to borrow from the bank unless due approval is obtained from the relevant authorities. For this reason, you should be ready to submit yourselves to regular auditing, just as the state government has done in the past five years.� Speaking on behalf of the other chairmen, the chairman of Umuahia North local government council, Rev. Sam Ekeledo, commended the governor for empowering them and promised on behalf of others that they would discharge their duties diligently.
