Youths Plead for Savannah Bank
The federal government has been urged to revisit the closure of Savannah Bank and Slok Airlines with a view to getting them back into business.
Ohanaeze Youth Council made the appeal in a statement issued at Enugu, made available to THISDAY, saying that events have shown that the closure of both firms was in bad faith.
In the statement signed by the duo of Nnamdi Nwokocha, national president and Chuks Ibegbu, secretary general, the OYC argued that Savannah and Slok were victims of political vendetta, adding that it was unfortunate that "politics in Nigeria is always mixed up with business and issues that affect peoples lives tremendously."
The group recounted with regret that the economic and social dislocations engendered by the closure of Savannah Bank a few years ago led to loss of thousands of jobs thereby throwing up more job seekers into the already saturated job market.
"When the chips were down it was discovered that contrary to theory that the bank was illiquid the real cause of the closure was the political differences between its major shareholders and the power that be in government (and) for this power alone thousands of Nigerians were rendered jobless," the statement said.
The OYC, which is youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, further noted that the same "sordid act" was replayed in the revocation of operating license of Slok Airlines with "direful and devastating consequences on the innocent workers and aviation users."
The group therefore called on the federal government to reconsider its stand on Savannah Bank and Slok airlines in the interest of the suffering workers and those that need the services of the closed firms.
On the decay of infrastructures in the South East geopolitical zone, OYC demanded a speedy attention by the federal government, saying that the decay has persisted despite cries and pleas to the authorities.
