Group urges Lagos to help rebuild NURTW
secretariat
By Victor Ebimomi
reporter, Lagos
The Lagos State government has been called upon to
assist the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to rebuild its
state secretariat which was gutted by fire two weeks’ ago.
Making the call in a letter sent to the union after the inferno,
the National Co-ordinator of No Accident This Year (NATY), Mr. Olanrewaju
Akinfewa said it was unfortunate that the secretariat was destroyed by fire
when the leadership was trying everything possible to transform the totality of
the union to an enviable level.
He lamented the occurrence of the incident and
particularly consoled the present head of the union, Chief Adesina Ajayi who he
noted had contributed immensely towards the upliftment of the union including
donating his personal fund for its cause. “He has used his personal
funds, he has been in the forefront of ensuring that members of NURTW are
respected. This became glaring immediately he assumed leadership of the
association when he directed they move to their present headquarters, which is
more befitting”, he said.
He said the latest cause being charted for the union
by its leaders made it more painful that the disaster had to befall it but
however enjoined them to take the incident as an inevitable occurrence .
His words: “ It is due to the perceived
direction that you are given the union that makes painful that this has to
happen at this point. However, it is noteworthy that the laws of the almighty
know each happening in our lives and why they happen”.
While calling on the state government not abandon the union
at this critical period, Akinfewa also enjoined all well- meaning Nigerians to
donate their widow’s mite toward s rapid rebuilding of the burnt edifice.
