El-Yakub warns on danger
of power shift agitation

The House of Representative member from Kano State,
Alhaji Umar Ibrahim El-Yakub, has said that the ruling Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) should be ready to accept responsibility for whatever fate
that may befall the nation over power shift.
Alhaji El-Yakub, who represents Kano municipal federal
constituency in the House, noted with concern that the controversy that
has trailed the agitation for power shift, especially between the North
and South East, is assuming a dangerous dimension. “The wrangling
associated with the demand for power shift by the North and South East is
the price we pay for pursuing undemocratic principles. PDP should be blamed for
enshrining power shift in their agenda. Power shift is undemocratic as it encourages ethnic
and regional politics, where leaders emerge on ethnic consideration, rather
than sound character, merit, competence and national acceptance by the
people,” he said.
He lamented that instead of implementing the
manifestoes on the people’s aspirations, the PDP was busy inventing
confusion in the system through power shift and other actions.
El-Yakub noted, for instance, that the growing
agitation for the 2007 race was being pursuit by PDP chieftains and their
allies. According to him,
this shows that the leadership has lost focus, the elected officials have
equally lost focus, pointing out that the elected officials had abandoned
their responsibilities in pursuit of personal agenda. He added that such
build-up when the present government is barely one year old would not
succeed. “We cannot achieve
anything in a hurry. When the time comes, the people will decide who goes
where and it should be based on merit and competence and not ethnic or
regional consideration sponsored by the PDP,” he said, adding: “The
executive has failed Nigerians and should apologise for not being alive to
their responsibilities to the Nigerian people.”
