Emeagwali's feat

Very recently, a globally conducted poll by the Internet adjudged Phillip Emeagwali the best scientist the world has produced in the last 50 years.

Instructively, his feat is a credit to the present generation of Nigerian youths. Emeagwali is a Nigerian. He is not an American. He is not even from Japan, the country with awesome culture of technology. History recorded it that he had the formative phase of his glorious life in Nigeria.

It is not impossible that a country like America is uncomfortable with this development and perhaps, Japan and Britain. These are countries that believe that every good thing of life must always come from their countries. But, they are left with little or no choice. The world has spoken. The Internet technology is open to everybody all over the world. Today, the world's richest individual is Bill Gates. He is actually renowned in everything that computer represents until recently when he personally confessed that, the sufficiently endowed Nigerian has overtaken him in the art of computer.

Emeagwali's feat has elevated Nigeria in the reckoning of the world. His feat might have succeeded in placing Nigeria where it belongs in the world map. Unknowingly, it might serve as a means of convincing the global community that our land is not just about fraud, prostitution, 419 and other social vices and that good things could as well come from Nigeria.

Whether the western world likes it or not, Emeagwali is a Nigerian. And that suggests that the power pendulum is gradually swinging. I have said it times without number that if there is any black African country capable of becoming a world super power, that country is Nigeria. I have also said it severally that Nigerians do not have any reason abandoning their country for European and American countries.

We have abundant natural resources. We have people with amazing skills in every sphere of human endeavour. We have an incredible weather and climate. We have a rugged and hardworking population. We are people of rich culture. We have glamour. We are a very colourful people. God probably endows us with everything except good set of leaders. Our leaders could as well be regarded as terrorists because they terrorise us.

But Emeagwali's feat may have reversed those negative tendencies. It has wiped off our tears. The country can use his feat to re-launch itself back into reckoning. We can use the opportunity of this event to serve notice of our readiness to engage the world in the battle for supremacy.
