Policemen held in Owerri over students death

By Ben Duru

Correspondent, Owerri

The Imo State Police Command says it has apprehended the trigger-happy policemen who shot, killed and buried a final year biochemistry student of the Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU).

Just as protesting students of the university on Friday demanded the release of the corpse of their slain colleague to the parents for a decent burial or there would be no truce.

A statement signed by the Commands spokesman, Mr Chinedu Okoh, a superintendent of police, said the men were picked up following investigations conducted into the killing two Saturdays ago at Orji area of the Owerri metropolis.

The statement is coming on the heels of a meeting held last weekend between the students union leaders and the Deputy Governor, Chief Ebere Udeagu, where the students were advised to lay down their arms.

The students, who continued the peaceful demonstration they started on Monday, had clashed with police team comprising both mobile and conventional policemen at the Wetheral Roundabout, who dispersed them with several rounds of tear gas.

The tear gas, which was indiscriminately used, saw commuters and passersby, as well as students, suffering, especially pupils of a nearby primary school at Item Street, who cried their hearts out because of the scourge of the gas.

This was said to have led to several of the primary school pupils receiving injuries as they stumbled over themselves to escape the tear gas.

Udeagu complimented the union leaders for the orderly way they have conducted themselves throughout the period of their grievances, saying that they should not allow themselves to be used by detractors as instruments of unrest.

According to the deputy governor, government would do everything to get to the root of the matter but warned that government would only wade in if the students do not resort to violence and wanton destruction of property.

He assured them that the present administration was all out to ensure that justice prevails in every situation, stating that government would not fold its arms to see any form of injustice meted out to anybody within the state.
