NDLEA declares war on drug barons

By Dan Alo

Correspondent, Lagos

Following the killing of five of its officials last week in Kano State, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said it would fight drug barons in the state to standstill.

NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Bello Lafiagi, declared the war when he visited the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos office of the agency in company of American narcotics department officials at the weekend.

He said, “The ugly incident of Kano underscores the fact that the task of fighting drug trafficking is not an easy one. A lot of sacrifices go into it and we are not ready to give up. We will continue to make sure that our society is free from the influence of hard drugs”.

Lafiagi added that, “The death of these officers is painful but if any of those involved in trafficking of hard drugs think this will deter us from carrying out our duties, they are making a big mistake. We are ready for them. We are declaring a war on them and we will rid Kano of drug barons. It is a battle we are prepared to fight”.

“For the officers that lost their lives, we have sent condolence messages to their families and they will get adequate compensations. The police have been very helpful. With their support we have been able to arrest some drug barons who we suspect were the mastermind in the killings,” he explained.

Lafiagi said the “American department of narcotics has been very supportive of NDLEA programmes and in these war we are about to launch we are already getting the needed support in terms of logistics and equipment. We promise to make judicious use of the knowledge and support given by this department to make our society drug free”.
