PDP asks Olowoporoku to vacate senatorial seat

By Paul Mumeh,

Senior Correspondent, Abuja

Sequel to his expulsion from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform he was elected to the National Assembly, Senator Bode Olowoporoku (PDP Ekiti), has been directed by the party to vacate his seat in the upper house immediately.

Olowoporoku was expelled by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) for anti-party activities, following the Deputy National chairman (North), Senator Ibrahim Safana led disciplinary committee, which found him wanting of misdemeanor.

Relying on section 221 of the 1999 constitution, which prescribed that only a registered political party can sponsor a candidate for election; the PDP said at the weekend that Olowoporoku no longer has the platform to be in the Senate.

“We will soon commence the process of his replacement. He cannot work against the party and enjoy the benefits of the party. He has ceased to be our member and can no longer represent us in the senate,” National Publicity Secretary of the party, Venatius Ikem confirmed in Abuja.

Olowoporoku was alleged to have worked for the rival All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) against the PDP at the last local government election in Ekiti State. Besides, he has been having a running battle with Governor Ayo Fayose over who controls the soul of Ekiti politics.

But the Senate indicated yesterday that it would ascertain whether the PDP has the power to sack an elected senator or it is the electorate in Olowoporoku’s constituency that has the power to recall him.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Senator Tawar Wada, told Daily Independent that the issue would be reviewed on Tuesday at the plenary session.
